Seafloor, charts and marine-use data

Bathymetry, chart and marine-use references for understanding an offshore research area.

Purpose and context

OceanGrid brings marine and environmental data into a product-specific research context. Its public resources distinguish measured observations, modeled surfaces, forecasts and navigational products. The original agencies remain the authorities for releases, quality flags and terms. A source's presence in this collection does not mean all of its records are available through OceanGrid.

Using these references

GEBCO's gridded bathymetry provides broad seafloor context; its cell size and contributing measurements limit what can be inferred at a small site. Official chart products serve a different purpose and have their own update practices. MarineCadastre layers can place vessel activity and other marine uses in context, but a map layer does not establish legal access or a complete impact assessment. Record the edition, coordinate reference and date of each layer before overlaying them.

Scope and limitations

These references support research and data discovery. They are not navigation instructions, a marine forecast, a permit assessment or assurance of conditions at an installation.

Sources and public resources

GEBCO bathymetric grids

Global seabed terrain models and grid documentation. A compilation cell does not establish that every location was directly surveyed.

NOAA chart products

Official nautical chart products and updates. Use current official navigation products rather than a research summary for navigation.

MarineCadastre

Marine planning, ocean-use and vessel-traffic data discovery. Dates and coverage matter when comparing infrastructure and environmental context.
